Generations of computers are broadly classified into two types

1. Non-electronic generation (zero generation).

First Generation of Computers (1946s – 1959s)

Computers implemented during this period of 1946–1959 are called “first generation computers.” A vacuum tube was used in this generation. The first generation of computers had limited internal capacity and storage capacity.

• ‌Smaller size in comparison to first-generation computers.
• ‌Generated less heat in comparison to a first-generation computer.
• ‌Consumed less electricity.
• ‌Faster than a comparison to a first-generation.

• ‌Supported machine and assembly-level languages.
• ‌Some computers of this generation are IBM 1620 and UNIVAC.

Third Generation of Computers (1965s – 1971s)

Computers invented between 1965 and 1971 are called “Third Generation” computers. These computers were small in size, low in price, and had better speed.

• Integrated circuits were used in third-generation computers.
• More reliable in comparison to previous generations.
• Smaller size.
• Generated less heat.
• Faster in comparison to previous-generation computers.
• Cheap price.
• AC is needed.
• Consumed less electricity.
• Supported high-level language.
• Some computers of this generation were IBM 360s and PDPs (Personal Data Process).

Fourth Generation of Computers (1971s – 1980s)

Computers invented between 1971 and 1980 are called fourth-generation computers. These used large-scale integrated circuits.

• portable and reliable, too.
• No AC is needed.
• The concept of the internet was introduced.

Fifth Generation of Computers (1980s – present)

The period of fifth-generation computers is from 1980 to the present.

• The period of the fifth generation is from 1980 onward.
• ULSI technology is used (ultra large scale integrated).
• Development of artificial intelligence.
• Development of natural language processing.
• Advancement in parallel processing.
• Advancement in semiconductor technology.
• More user-friendly interfaces with multimedia features
